Because I felt that someone should make a playoff prediction for the first round, here I go. There are no big surprises, as the regular season match-ups were my basic guide. Good luck!
Ignite vs Saints
During the regular season these teams met seven times with the Saints winning the series with a 4-1-2 record. The Saints have dominated the meetings between these two teams and should continue doing so throughout this series.
Saints in five.
Rednex vs Pontiacs
Of the six games between these two teams during the regular season, the Pontiacs held a 5-1-0 record. However, the Pontiac wins were all extremely close as is evident by the GF/GA between these two teams at 19-18 in favour of the Pontiacs.
Pontiacs in six.
Aces vs Owls
With only two games between these two teams in the regular season, it is difficult to point to a definite advantage for one team over the other, but if it seems as if the Owls have a distinct scoring advantage in this series, having had one win and one tie with the win being a 5-0 blowout.
Owls in seven.
Spirit vs Mustangs
While the Spirit dominated during the two meetings of these teams during the season, it should be noted that the Mustangs received a serious goalie upgrade in Bryzgalov and this should greatly improve their chances. The Mustangs are also the defending champions and cannot be cast off lightly.
Mustangs in seven.
Wheat King vs Achaeans
These teams ended up tied in their six matchups with 2-2-2 record, however the goals were largely in favour of the Achaeans. Both teams have been hot of late and should make this an incredible series.
Achaeans in seven.
Raiders vs Renegades
This is another very close matchup but the edge is slightly in favour of the Renegades.
Renegades in six.
Blackhawks vs Flames
The Flames have edged the Blackhawks winning four of their six meetings with only two wins going to the Blackhawks.
Flames in six.
Sioux vs Pain
This is definitely the closest matchup in the first round of the playoffs. Both teams have three wins during their six games of the regular season and the only advantage is that the Pain edged the Sioux 22-20 in the goals category. This series could easily go either way, but will very likely go to seven games.

PR - Pain
Sioux on the Hunt for Pain DETROIT - The Michigan Pain will open up the 19th TFHL playoffs at home against the Saskatoon Sioux. The Pain ended the season in a pre-playoff matchup against the Sioux. The last game of the season was easily won by Michigan by a score of 6-1. Bad blood is expected as in that final game Zherdev was knocked unconscious by a streaking Vincent Lecavalier. The check never received a suspension but the Sioux were in an uproar by the incident. It is expected that Zherdev will start game 1 but will not be 100%. The season series was tied at 3 wins each which has many suggesting it will be a tight series. If Theodore, TFHL 18 Con Smyth winner, plays as solid as he did last year it will be a close series. If Theodore does not show up, this series may be over quick as the Pain are much improved at the deadline. Bringing in veteran defenseman Skoula to an already good defense has only helped. The Pain allowed the fewest shots against in the league. Of course it will be all for not if Gigy does not play to his Vezina standards of years past. Now with an already potent power play they added superstar Tessier to the fold. In his 18 games with the Pain, he has amassed 24 points. If Tessier can stay healthy, he could be the edge the Pain need to get back to the Finals for a second straight year. Game 1 goes tomorrow night at 7:30pm est.

LIVE AFTER THE HURRICANES LOSS TO THE SAINTS IN A 3-0 DECISION
Ron MacLean: Ladies and gentlemen we're live from our studio at the Olympic Saddledome and today we we have with us live via satellite today Al Strachan from the Toronto Sun, and in studio Eric Duhatschek and Vancouver hockey columnist Ian Macintyre. I guess we'll just start with it, what has happened to the Hurricanes this season? Eric, go ahead and start.
Eric: Well Ron, I think it has come down to leadership. This team has seen some of its great leaders moved out over the years and I think the final kicker to the team was Naslund. I think Markus made his statement against the team tonight scoring his 32nd of the season in the 3rd period. There isn't a Hurricane that has reached the 30 goal plateau and unless Jason King gets hot I doubt anybody will.
Al: You know guys I think the biggest problem has been quick fixes for this team. They relied on veterans for so many seasons and never really started to get involved with the farm team up until a season or two ago and unfortunately for GM Major he missed the mark and that ugly transition year hit him earlier and harder than ever expected. I think the Roman Hamrlik deal was to be a band aid for a mediocre defense, yet he turned out to be a 9.5 million dollar bust.
Ron: Do you think the Hurricanes will make these kinds of offers again?
Al: I can't imagine they would nor any team for that matter. The new RFA rules are going to see salaries for younger players increase, I don't see too many teams taking on salaries higher than 6 or 7 million. They'll likely handcuff themselves down the road as their RFA's increase in the value. The gravy ride is over for GM's now that RFA's could potentially lower their salary expectations.
Ron: So Ian, what are some of they key things that the 'Canes will need to address in the upcoming season?
Ian: I'll be quite honest I think this team is brimming with talent for the future. They have stocked a lot of prospects and got a lot younger. The farm team used to be full of overpaid veterans and now we're seeing a lot of those guys moved out. The defensive talent looks good and the team managed to pick up some guys entering their prime years in Alex Sulzer and David Turon, these two guys along with Ryan Parent and Badass Jack will be the cornerstone of the team. It will all come down to the off season to see how improved the forwards become. The Simon Gagne pick up was a great move and he'll be great along with fellow sniper Jason King next year.
Al: They have no goal tending. I predict right now because of that they will find themselves with the worst GAA again. The moved the wrong goalie at the beginning of the season, Bryzgalov should of been the #1 guy. I think that was a salary move but now they are finding themselves out of the playoffs and nearly dead last.

PR - Pontiacs
The first game of Sunday's double header saw the Bonnyville Pontiacs not only pull off a win but in fact shutting out the Chicago Blackhawks who seemed to have their number this season winning all two previous encounters this season.
However, the win came at a great price. Both Jonas Johansson and Ryan O'Marra received unfortunate injuries, taking them out for a month and a week respectively. This basically means that Johansson is out for the rest of the season, along with Danny Fritsche, but that O'Marra may be lucky enough to find himself in the last game of the season along with Teemu Laakso who is also on the injury list.
Both perpetrators of these injuries, Blackhawk players Hugh Jessiman and Matthew Corrente were only slapped on the wrist with a game misconduct. However, when Brad Stuart stepped up to defend his teammates and injuring Dmitri Kalinin in the process, he was not only ejected from the game but also received a four game suspension. Kalinin will also be out for the rest of the season.
That win along with a couple of losses by the Marauders has secured a playoff spot for the Bonnyville Pontiacs for the first time in franchise history. One fan was quoted as saying, "I am already on the waiting list for the first round! It is going to be AWESOME!!!" At the moment, the Pontiacs are sitting in first place in the Hitman division, but with the Owls and Spirit only five points behind anything can happen. Especially with so many key players out of the lineup.
When asked about the teams bad luck with injuries coach Craig MacTavish was quoted as saying, "Every team has to go through this sometimes, and it is never fun, but fortunately for us, we have some solid prospects coming up the ranks in the person's of Alzner and Petrecki and this gives us a chance to see how they perform in the pros. Alzner showed great promise earlier in the season when we struggled with a number of injuries on defense. We definitely miss Danny, Jonas, Ryan, Teemu and Brad, boy I almost ran out of breath with that list, but seriously, it will be difficult but I am sure that we will continue to push on.
The team's next game is against division rival, the Miami Misconduct, a team that they have had limited success against during the season winning only two of the past five games. The challenge will be even greater with such a wounded roster, and with the Misconduct under the pressure of getting into the playoffs, this game should be exciting.
The Pontiacs find themselves in a position where they still have a slim chance of catching the Saskatoon Saints for top spot in the Eastern Conference, but also with the real possibility of losing home ice advantage in the playoffs if the Owls, Spirit and Mustangs continue to put on the pressure.

WILD RACE IN WEST HEADIN' DOWN THE STRETCH
For the entire history of the FHL-TFHL the Western Conference has had a clear dominance over the East and every season that advantage has become more pronounced. The result of such a discrepancy is that the West is full of powerful teams the must keep looking for a new edge even to maintain their chance at playoff qualification. The Darwinian consequences are that the while the East due to lack of competition becomes evermore the Dodo, the West is evolving (or creatively designed-ing) evermore into a supra sentient homo hockilibis just waiting to snack on that juicy little bird.
This year has seen perhaps the most intense and deep competition in an already notable history. With about 25 games remaining every team from 12th through 7th was within six points of the 7th seed. Within the last fifteen games three teams have played at well over .600 to distinguish themselves from the rest and make this the tightest and most exceptional race to date. With ten games remaining, the Wheat Kings, who currently sit ninth, have a win percentage better than ten Eastern Conference teams
A surge after the All-Star break made them look like a safe bet to make the playoffs at the Trade Deadline. However, a gamble on Gaborik disrupted team chemistry and it looked for a second as if the Raiders would be the team to fall from contention, but they've recouped and have come on strong in the last few games and are again looking like a safe bet.
Although Bergenheim hasn't played well for them, the Dogs have performed well since his addition and were able to solidify their place in the race. Steady .600 hockey has been their standard for the last 30 games, a streak by the Kings and/or Raiders could unseat them, but slow and steady usually wins the race.

WITHIN HOURS - HURRICANES MOVE GETZLAF TO CONFERENCE RIVAL
Hurricanes - The Hurricanes are 6 points back of the Ignite for the
final playoff spot. To muddy waters a bit more the Hurricanes have
moved Ryan Getzlaf within hours of announcing his availability to the
Marauders who are only 4 points ahead of the 'Canes.
"First, thanks to all the teams for the inquiries. We managed to pick
up a heck of a hockey player today in Alexander Sulzer.' said GM
Major. The Hurricanes have transformed their blue line into something
that they hope will develop into a real shut down group next season.
The top three are now Bryan Mccabe, David Turon and Alex Sulzer.
"This is a pretty exciting deal as we add more depth to our blue line
and we also manage to keep a respectful scoring unit up front. There
is still some work to do."
The Hurricanes are planning for next season. The top 6 forwards
include Alex Sundstrom, Alex Svitov, Jason King, Boyd Gordon, Simon
Gagne and rookie Viktor Stahlberg. The farm team still has many
hopefuls for next season looking for a starting spot which includes
Brandon Sutter, Kim Johansson, and Martin Karsums. On the backend the
'Canes already have the Big 3, but also have up and coming prospects
Badass Jack and Ryan Parent who both started full time duty and are
expected to crack the Top 4 next season.
The only question mark for the Hurricanes is in goal. Boucher is
getting older and has been very inconsistent this season. Rookies
Cory Schneider and Jeremy Smith both have some time to go before they
are ready to become the next go to guy for the Hurricanes.
Don't expect the 'Canes to move either of these two goaltenders as
they have been burned once before. Tobias Stephan is a former draft
pick of the Hurricanes and is now the top goaltender for the Donkey
Punchers. Wouldn't he have looked good back in goal for the 'Canes?
With the trade deadline fast approaching there could still be some
more moves. The Hurricanes still have 7 draft picks for the upcoming
draft. Who knows what could still happen.....

GM Osborne: Today our organization has traded Michael Tessier to the Pain
for forward Brock Radunske and a 1st and 3rd round draft picks. We feel this
is an excellent trade for the Fog Devils. Tessier was coming to the end of
his contract and we had zero intentions of re-signing him. While Tessier is
a skilled froward, we did not believe his recent points production and his
average of 50 games per season could allow us to keep him at the salary he
would request. Rather than losing him as a RFA and getting some draft picks
for him, we traded for Brock Radunske. Radunske is a great power forward
that loves to check and has the ability to produce points wise. As well the
first and third round picks we acquired will help build our club in the long
run as well.

Pierre McGuire: This is how trades are supposed to work!!! Both teams
benefitting from the deal. Both teams had star players they were not happy
with and were not playing. The Pain not happy with his play were playing
Radunske on their third line, while the Fog Devils frustrated with Tessier’s
constant injury problems and poor pont production for someone of his caliber
decided it as time to move him.
Radunske is tough, I like this player, he is in the top ten for hits and he
loves physical play, but does it smart with very few penalties. He can put
up the same kind of points as Tessier has in recent seasons and will
solidify the Fog Devils penalty kill. The draft picks are icing on the cake
as any time a team sits with two first round picks, they increase their
chance of drafting that star player of the future.
With Tessier the Pain get a player who has the ability to be one of the top
players in the league. As always the issue with him is keeping him healthy.
To my knowledge Tessier has never played a full season, as GM Osborne was
quoted as saying “ this guy could get in the shower in the morning and
injures himself for three months. If Tessier can shake this injury bug that
seems to follow him around, then the Pain could make a very serious run at
the championship this season.
Many see this trade as the beginning of the flood gates for trades before
the deadline, this could very well be the case as at the end of his press
conference GM Osborne suggested more moves could be on their way “ I’m not
done, I got some forwards I can move to acquire some good young players for
this team” His closed the press conference with a sly smile and this
statement, “my phone is always on”.

PR - Pain
Tessier Arrives in Detroit , Michigan :
Pain Much Improved
With the trade deadline looming, The Michigan Pain traded away underachieving Radunske for disgruntled play-maker Michael Tessier. With Tessier being benched for the last few weeks, the Fog Devils made it obvious that Tessier was on the move. The Fog Devils also received a 1st and a 3rd round draft pick.
Today, Tessier was all smiles during the morning skate as the Pain host the Ignite later tonight. “I am extremely happy to be given a fresh start for an extremely talented team. I look forward to helping the Pain win a championship.” Tessier said after the skate.
The Pain have finely shown their true colours after a dismal start. The Pain had a case of the TFHL Cup blues as they came up short in last years finals. They now sit in 4th with an opportunity to take the Conference. With Tessier being added and a new set of confidence for an already powerful squad, the rest of the TFHL should take notice.
Star Forward Cam Janssen will be out for 3 weeks due to a cheap by Ignite player Ben Ulmer.

PR - Pontiacs
With half of the season left to go, the Pontiacs seemed to have slipped a little off of their earlier pace. Pontiac's GM Andrew Schoenberger decided that a few changes were needed to shake things up and hopefully reignite the fire that has propelled the team on pace for the best season in Franchise history.
The first move by Schoenberger was to send Coburn and Setoguchi to the Wheat King's. "It is hard to be traded. There are a great bunch of guys, here in Bonnyville, but I really can't blame them for trading me, this hasn't been my best season." stated and downcast Coburn as he prepared to leave on his flight to Saskatoon. Setoguchi, on the other hand, seemed excited to be going to Saskatoon, "The depth of the Bobcats and the Pontiacs never really gave me a chance to prove myself in the pros, since I was really only an injury replacement, hopefully I will get my chance to play in the pros in Saskatoon."
Coming to Bonnyville were Ryan O'Marra, the Pontiacs' TFHL 17 2nd round pick, and Boris Valabik. "I am really excited to be back in Bonnyville. These guys place my style of hockey, and I know that I can make a contribution here." Valibik was a little less enthusiastic but said nonetheless, "I enjoyed playing with the Wheaties, and here I have to fill the shoes left by Coburn, which won't be easy, however, I feel that I am up to the challenge and I am ready to make a contribution."
The second move saw Jeff May go to the Misconduct along with some picks. May has been known as the league's top enforcer this year, and so I would be concerned how he might react the next time he plays against his old team. GM Andrew Schoenberger lauged at that comment and said, "Jeff is a great guy, in fact, he brought a lot of life to the locker room, however, sometimes you have to make tough decisions, that's life."
From the Misconducts came Jacub Hulva, who seemed very excited to be here. "Coach Craig MacTavish just told me that I would be playing on a line with Jonas and Danny! Who would not be excited to play with such great players? I know that I haven't been having the best season yet, but I am confident that alongside these two Greats I will be able to perform well."

MALIGNED WHEAT KINGS MAKE DEAL FOR D-MAN
A day after learning that Jimmie Howard would be out for at least a week, the Kings announced to the media that they had completed a deal with the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
Leaving Saskatoon are Boris Valabik and Ryan O'Marra, arriving are Braydon Coburn and Devin Setogucchi.
"We excited to be adding a defenceman of Braydon's calibre," Coach-GM Tyler Young said, "I think everyone can agree that our defence hasn't been up to it's typical standards. Getting a guy like Coburn just gives us a little bit more talent back there. We gave up two good young players, especially O'Marra, who's looking like an excellent young forward. But with Bergfors, Hennessy, Forsberg and Mueller, we just had too many natural centers and there really wasn't room for O'Marra on the top two lines."
The Wheat Kings had been looking for a deal for nearly a month now and many Wheat-watchers have mave been expecting something bigger, possibly including captain Josh Hennessy, intended to shake the Kings out of their mediocre play this season.
"If I wasn't also owner of this team, I'd probably already be fired." Mr. Young joked. "We're on track to our third sub-500 season in four years, and that is just unacceptable. Yes we had something of a young team, but we're getting older now, we should be taking steps forward - and the truth of the matter is that we aren't. Statswise we are on a pace comparable to last season."
"The good news is that the season is only half-way over and we're still in a position to compete for the playoffs. The problem is that the West is tougher than ever this season - any more slips and we'll be hard pressed to get to the post-season."
18 YEAR OLD GOALIE FLOURISHING
After Howard went down, Mr Young announced that Antoine Lafleur, the team's 18 year old goaltending prospect, would be the go-to guy for next week or so as Howard recovered. In his first game Lafleur was sacked by the Achaeans with five goals. But in his second against the Mustangs he responded with a shut-out and then won his third against the high-flying Spirit.
"I was very shakey that first game, for sure," Lafleur said, "but knowing that I was in going to play the next nigjt, it just gave me a lot of confidence, and I focused on trying to get myself ready for that."
When drafted some scouts had compared him to a young Pascal Leclaire, but after a horrible start earlier this season against the Flames and then his poor play in the minors over the last month, the Kings had nearly written him off. Rumours were that he was nearly dealt at least on two occasions.
"We'll see, it's likely too early to get a definite idea about him yet," Mr. Young said, "but right now it's looking pretty lucky that we didn't trade him this season."
Notes&Rumours: The Wheat Kings are rumoured to be floating their captain, Josh Hennessy, on the market. Hennessy though has picked up his play of late... Mike Frolik, recalled from a conditioning stint in the minors after a terrible start to the season, was injured today and will likely miss 2-3 weeks... the Wheat Kings picked-up Dan Hinote off waivers Tuesday...

Saskatoon Saints Acquire Naslund from Division Rivals
Saints GM Geoffrey Young made an unexpected trade today with Bobcats GM Glenn Merkir. The teams second leading goal-scorer, Fredrik Sjostrom (18 goals), was sent to Brantford along with veteran centre Jason Arnott in exchange for veteran super star Markus Naslund and defenseman Thierry Nelson. The deal was somewhat surprising considering the Saints' relatively strong play so far this season. Currently sitting with the #2 Offence in the TFHL, the departure of Sjostrom could hurt their offensive output which took a while to gain momentum early on in the season.
The Saints had a light skate and team meeting in Saskatoon this afternoon, in preparation for tonight's game against the Melfort Mustangs. Following the practise, GM Young commented on his latest acquisitions: "In the long run this deal clearly helps an obvious defensive hole that we had. I've had my eye on Nelson ever since he was picked up by the once Saskatoon Ice. The former GM Mark Gaucher wouldn't part with him so when I got an offer from Glenn today, I felt this was a great opportunity to solidify our defence for the next 3-4 years at least. We've now got Baranka, Ballard, Rozakov, Nelson and Lashoff; all five of them are 24 or younger and in long-term contracts. Things are looking good, and with players like Vitaly Vishnevski playing great defensively - I think he has a league-high +23 currently - we are quite solid...Markus Naslund is a perennial point-a-game player, as well, and we liked what we saw last season after we picked him up at the draft from Derek Major. He was traded before because of our own salary problems but now we can finally give him the ice time he deserves." Markus Naslund: "I'm looking forward to playing again with some of the best young talent in the league...Chris (Higgins), Dan (Paille), Ilya (Kovalchuk), and of course lil' Lombardi, my former teammate and trade-mate from the Hurricanes! It's good to be back in Saskatoon and I hope I can finish my career in a Saints jersey...but I'd like at least one more championship ring first!"

the league after being considered a contender for 5 or 6 seasons in a
row. I think the last time the Hurricanes franchise missed the
playoffs was about 11 or 12 seasons ago."

The first trade involved Wade Redden and Justin Williams being moved
to the Marauders immediately after the 5 - 1 loss against the
Renegades. "Well, the GM came down and both told us and then
announced it to the team. It wasn't too much of a surprise. We've
struggled so far this season and now the team needs changes.
Unfortunately for Justin and I that means we're gone." Said Redden.
The Hurricanes do acquire 24-year old Boyd Gordon who is known for his
power forward status. He is expected to compliment two other tough
forwards in Alexander Svitov and Ryan Getzlaf. Also in the trade the
Hurricanes receive a prospect in Ty Wishart. Ty is expected to be
part of a young defense corps that includes Ryan Parent and Badass
Jack.
Roman Hamrlik was traded to the Fog Devils in exchange for a 3rd round
pick in TFHL21, a move that was done in light of salary room and a
movement to the future. This trade was widely expected after the
re-building announcement as the 'Canes look to get cap room to make
other trades in the near future.

PR - Fog Devils

Jen: Good evening and welcome to sports center I'm , lets begin with a look
at hockey and the TFHL. Having just returned from a the leagues Christmas
break a lot of teams were taking stock of where they were and just how happy
they have been with their teams performance, and some are finding out just
how unmerry of a year its been for them so far
* we fade into a shot of the Fog Devils at practice and hear a voice over by
TSN reporter James Cybulski*
Its been a long journey for the Fog Devils, From the leagues top penalty
kill and a final four finish, to a leagues worst penalty kill and fighting
hard just to not have the TFHL'S worst record.
Paul Maurice: No doubt its been a tough season, we seem to be struggling
just to be inconsistent. Not all of this team have shown up for even one
game, some step up one night then take the next night off while other guys
seem to step up, I think this team could do some special things if we all
stepped it up on the same night.

occurred* The team has had some injury problems, culminating to a recent
injury to star forward Michael Tessier who is out for 4 months
Paul Maurice: well yes we have had some injuries but I don't believe we have
had the injury bug worse than any other team, until Tessier all our injuries
have been fairly minor with no extended time missed. But with the injuries
others have had opportunities and are impressing me with their play
James Cybulski: (practice highlights of Sam Gagner and Luc Bourdon play)
Undoubtedly the head coach is speaking of Sam Gagner and Luc Bourdon, two
young players who have come up and made strong cases to stick with the big
club. Gagner has played 6 games and has 6 points, while Bourdon has played
well enough to boot vet Mathieu Biron from the line up.
Sam Gagner: Its always great to get an opportunity to play in the big
league, I mean you don't want to see anyone get hurt but you have to make
the best of your opportunities and that’s what I intend to do, I want to
make it hard on them to send me back down
Luc Bourdon: It’s a much faster game up here, I am just glad I have some
great D men to learn from up here, I am just trying to take it all in.
(with Maurice running practice in the back ground) James Cybulski: but the
low lights have been much more the norm around here then highlights. Leaving
many to wonder if some big shake ups might be in the works.
GM Osborne: I can assure you Paul Maurice's job is safe, I believe he is
doing everything he can to get this club into the playoffs. Quite frankly we
just scraped into the playoffs last year, so really he is not far off pace
from last year. he is a good coach, just seems the players here are hell
bent on proving our playoff success last year was a fluke.
James Cybulski: This comment by the GM lead many to believe a fire sale of
the team may be just around the corner.
GM Osborne: I wouldn’t say I am about to do a fire sale, but frustration is
setting in. Right about now I'd trade my own mother is it would give us a
few more notches in the win column.

at hockey and the TFHL. Having just returned from a the leagues Christmas
break a lot of teams were taking stock of where they were and just how happy
they have been with their teams performance, and some are finding out just
how unmerry of a year its been for them so far

Its been a long journey for the Fog Devils, From the leagues top penalty
kill and a final four finish, to a leagues worst penalty kill and fighting
hard just to not have the TFHL'S worst record.
Paul Maurice: No doubt its been a tough season, we seem to be struggling
just to be inconsistent. Not all of this team have shown up for even one
game, some step up one night then take the next night off while other guys
seem to step up, I think this team could do some special things if we all
stepped it up on the same night.

occurred* The team has had some injury problems, culminating to a recent
injury to star forward Michael Tessier who is out for 4 months
Paul Maurice: well yes we have had some injuries but I don't believe we have
had the injury bug worse than any other team, until Tessier all our injuries
have been fairly minor with no extended time missed. But with the injuries
others have had opportunities and are impressing me with their play
James Cybulski: (practice highlights of Sam Gagner and Luc Bourdon play)
Undoubtedly the head coach is speaking of Sam Gagner and Luc Bourdon, two
young players who have come up and made strong cases to stick with the big
club. Gagner has played 6 games and has 6 points, while Bourdon has played
well enough to boot vet Mathieu Biron from the line up.
Sam Gagner: Its always great to get an opportunity to play in the big
league, I mean you don't want to see anyone get hurt but you have to make
the best of your opportunities and that’s what I intend to do, I want to
make it hard on them to send me back down
Luc Bourdon: It’s a much faster game up here, I am just glad I have some
great D men to learn from up here, I am just trying to take it all in.
(with Maurice running practice in the back ground) James Cybulski: but the
low lights have been much more the norm around here then highlights. Leaving
many to wonder if some big shake ups might be in the works.
GM Osborne: I can assure you Paul Maurice's job is safe, I believe he is
doing everything he can to get this club into the playoffs. Quite frankly we
just scraped into the playoffs last year, so really he is not far off pace
from last year. he is a good coach, just seems the players here are hell
bent on proving our playoff success last year was a fluke.
James Cybulski: This comment by the GM lead many to believe a fire sale of
the team may be just around the corner.
GM Osborne: I wouldn’t say I am about to do a fire sale, but frustration is
setting in. Right about now I'd trade my own mother is it would give us a
few more notches in the win column.

We Three Kings
Gonchar, Samsanov and O'Marra Join Wheaties
As the season passes out of its first quarter and with the Wheat Kings mired among the mediocre of the West, Coach-GM Tyler Young decided to offer Wheat-watchers a bit of an early Christmas gift.
Dispatching Alexei Shkotov, Jakubs Redlihs and Chuck Kobasew to the Brantford Bobcats, the Kings have added Sergei Gonchar, Sergei Samsonov and Ryan O'Marra.
"This is a heckuva trade to pull-off in the middle of the season," Mr. Young commented to the media tonight, "I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to add these guys. Gonchar is one of the few premier defencemen in the league, a former Norris winner, Samsonov has been a consistent point producer for years and has great experience, and O'Marra shows great promise as an playmaking center."
"Sure we gave up a lot, especially in youth, but we have quite a young team and we felt we could afford it. Now my hope is that this deal will shake us out of the malaise we've been in so far and put us into a safe (if there is such a thing in the West) playoff position."
Cynics might suggest that Mr. Young was forced into such a move by dealing away his first rounder this year and is just digging the hole deeper, giving up more youth, but he defended himself against the charge:
"The core remains in place, we're still quite young, in fact I think we were too young. A deal like this adds more depth to our organization in respect to experience and leadership, it gives us valuable intangibles."

Indy Looks to Ignite Offense
The typical Ignite season usually looks somthing like this: Teams scores loads of goals. Team allows loads of goals. Team loses early in playoffs due to
lack of defense. In the offseason, Indianapolis GM Adam Harrison looked for remedies to this issue, and managed to find a combination of defensemen
to this point, have kept the goals against low. Amongst the top few teams in the league defensively this year, it is the offensive this year that seems
to be the real let down. "I'm not sure if its the line combinations, the talent on the team or what", team captain Jerome Iginla said. "I think we really
have a good combination of forwards who can score but it just hasn't been happening for us."
Not content being mired in mediocraty, GM Harrison started his search for some offensive firepower. In a deal with the Misconduct (NOW WAAAAYYY!!!),
the Ignite shipped off free agent let down, Brooks Orpik and his 8 million dollar contract, along with long time Ignite winger Patrick Marleau and a 2nd rd
pick to the Misconduct for two offensive talents in Sami Kapanen and Blair Betts as well as young prospect Vladamir Ulianov and a few late round picks.
"We decided that the contract we signed Orpik to in the offseason was too much for what he was giving us, and thought he would be the perfect trade
bait to acquire some goal scoring", stated Harrison. While Kapanen has been a perenial talent for much of his career, Betts has played the journeyman
role recently, hoping now that he has found a home in Indy. "I think we have the type of talent to contend on any night now", said Betts, "as long as we
find some chemistry early and get this ship sailing."
The Ignite organization knows that there may be some initial growing pains early, but are optimistic that they will improve and return to one of the
better teams in the East once again.

The New Saskatoon Saints: A Member of the TFHL Elite
It’s now TFHL 19: the Saskatoon Saints and GM Geoffrey Young are an established part of a long TFHL history. The league was founded in 1993 and has weathered fourteen years – give or take a few months here and there – in which hundreds of GM’s have come and gone; and a dozen Commissioners have led the league through varying trials and triumphs. In a recent interview with this Saskatoon StarPhoenix reporter, GM Geoffrey Young nostalgically mused on his six years and eleven seasons in the TFHL. The Saints this season have started their best season in franchise history and are, without question, one of the elite teams in the TFHL. Their top line of Higgins, Paille and Kovalchuk, along with Ballard on defense, is the number one offensive line this season. Management has expressed its expectation and intention to win the Eastern Conference Title this season, and realizes how important conference games will be. At home in Saskatoon, the Saints have gone 8-0-0.
Geoffrey Young: “I got involved with the TFHL after my brother became GM of a struggling team that he would go on to rename the Saskatchewan Wheat Kings. After a couple months of watching and learning from his rookie mistakes – David Easton rip-off deals and other ‘fantasy hockey league’ conventions of humiliation – I decided to apply to join the league. So in TFHL 8 I took over the Mirkava Mutants and moved them to Saskatoon, renaming them the Saints. Of course, in an apprenticeship befitting of an older brother, Tyler introduced me to the essentials of league rules and politics in the traditional TFHL manner: over the course of the next few seasons, I was the most active GM in the league. I remember one trade my brother and I made which involved four teams and over 20 players as well as twice as many picks: We were cowboys! And our season performance reflected that.
When the league switched simulators, everything I had built was erased; but it was an opportunity to start from square one. This meant trading and drafting: two things I enjoy most.
Now after a few seasons, I have built a foundation on a few core players. The Spezza for Higgins trade might have been the cornerstone to the current franchise edifice. Around Higgins, I have compiled about 8 players, all currently around the mid-twenties age range, and I have been patient with them in their developing years. Now I believe it’s the make or break point for our team. Last season was our first semblance of playoff success, losing in the second round to the Aces in a hard-fought seven game series. But we are no beyond our ‘rebuilding years:’ now I expect results. I hope the fans in Saskatoon are excited about what they’ve already seen at home and they can expect their team to do anything to bring home our first franchise Championship.”
The Saskatoon Saints defeated their arch-rivals, the Calgary Hurricanes, today 6-3. The league has changed; the TFHL elite are admitting new members.

PR - Pontiacs: Eastern Conference Preview
Eastern Conference Preseason Analysis:
As another season begins, let us take a look at how the Eastern Conference teams have prepared themselves for TFHL season 19.
Bobcats:
Offense: The Bobcats have performed consistently well over the past several seasons, including capturing the conference title two years in a row. Naslund and Artemenkov should be key players in the Bobcat offense but don't could out other players like Samsonov, Kolanos and Ellison. They have a lot of depth and they have proven that they know how to use that depth effectively.
Grade: A-
Defense: This team has a very solid defense led by Sergei Gonchar. This team may very well have the best defense in the conference and expect them to make it difficult for other teams to get the puck past Nabokov.
Grade: A-
Goaltending: Nabokov should give them the confidence this team requires in the net and the free agency signing of Hnilicka has given them a compentent backup for the season.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: A-
Saints:
Offense: The Saints have built themselves up to be an offensive powerhouse. Having several of the top goal scorers from last season, it is pretty safe to assume that they will once again cause sunburns to appear on the backs of the necks of rival goaltenders. Higgins will once again lead the team's offense but he will have the assistance of Kovalchuk, Paille, Arnott and many others.
Grade: A
Defense: The Saints' powerful offense has caused a weak spot in their defense. While Baranka, Ballard and Rozakov will be strong on the blueline, they will have difficulty when they are not on the ice.
Grade: B-
Goaltending: Rask has developed into a solid goaltender and should give the Saint's the security they need in the net to be be successful.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: B+
Ignite:
Offense: Do I have to say it? Jerome Iginla. Look to him to be the star and leader of this team once again. While this team has other talent, the Ignite will have to rely heavily on Iginla's performance. Tambellini, Allison and Desautels will also have to play well, but all in all, this team's offense is in pretty good shape.
Grade: B+
Defense: The Ignite defense is fairly well rounded and balanced, but it lacks a clear leader. Will Gauthier, Orpik or Goc be able to step up to fill that role?
Grade: B-
Goaltending: Fleury is a good goalie that should be able to save the defense when necessary. If Fleury can play at the top of his game, this team should have no problem winning their fair share of games. Hopefully, Enroth will be able to save him if he falters.
Grade: A-
Overall Grade: B+
Marauders:
Offense: The Marauder offense lacks the depth of many other teams in the league. They will have to rely Gordon, Fehr, Peca and Alfredsson to pick up the slack and provide much needed leadership for the team in the scoring department.
Grade: B-
Defense: The Marauder defense is, perhaps, there strongest area. With Kosmachev, Regehr and Chara at the point supported by other solid defenders, their defense should be the determining factor on the amount of success that they have this season.
Grade: A-
Goaltending: Martin Brodeur is an experienced goalie who should provide the team with solid backing. However, the team better hope that he doesn't get injured or tired too quickly, because Esche and Pogge would have a very difficult time filling his shoes.
Grade: B
Overall Grade: B
Spirit:
Offense: It is no secret that the Spirit are a defensive team, Steen, Dvorak, Little and Fisher make it hard for other teams to get much offense going. However, they will have to rely on Hossa, O'Neill and Kovalev to pick up the slack in the scoring department. The Spirit have a balanced offense that should perform well in most situations.
Grade: A-
Defense: The Spirit's blueline looks a little weak going into this season. Phaneuf will have to be the leader in that department, and hopefully for the Spirit, he is up to the challenge. Fortunately for the Spirit, their defensive forwards should help pick up the slack.
Grade: B-
Goaltending: The Spirit have a strong combination with Salo and Turco between the pipes. Salo should provide them with quality goaltending, while Turco will give them the assurance they need when Salo is on the bench.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: B
Pontiacs:
Offense: The Pontiac offense will find its leadership in Fritsche, Johansson and Roenick. They are a young team that should find the experience of Roenick and Palffy invaluable. However, the team still lacks the offensive punch of many of its rivals.
Grade: B
Defense: The Pontiac defense does not look phenomenal but neither does it look weak. While the Stuarts and Coburn are the definite leaders on defense, there appears to be no gaping holes for other teams to exploit.
Grade: B+
Goaltending: The Pontiacs will be relying heavily upon Teemu Hovinen again this year, but, much like other teams in this conference, they lack a quality backup. Hovinen and Dupont also lack the experience of other goaltending combos, having both been drafted only at the beginning of last season.
Grade: B
Overall Grade: B
Owls:
Offense: Thornton and Sullivan will probably be the team leaders in points, but they have a lot of depth on offense that shouldn't limit them. Their acquisition of Sackrison should be a powerful asset to the team's performance this season.
Grade: B+
Defense: The Owls' defense has been led my Bouwmeester for the past few seasons and expect his leadership to play a major role again this season. Their defense is not as stunning as others we have seen but it is well balanced and should provide the team with relative security in their own zone.
Grade: B-
Goaltending: Auld and Luongo are an impressive 1-2 combination. Luongo could play as a starter on other teams in the league but here he will probably be on the bench as Auld's backup. They should give the Owls' forwards peace of mind that their backs are covered.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: B
Aces:
Offense: The Aces' possess solid depth up front with Bertuzzi, Walter, Madano, Gaborik and Demitra. If the team is able to gel together then I think this team could put a lot of points on the board.
Grade: B+
Defense: Keith and Picard will be heading up the Aces' defense. They will receive some support, but they will need to pick up the slack for some of their comrades on defense.
Grade: B
Goaltending: The Aces' have the best 1-2-3 combination in the league, however, it is logical to assume that one of them will be moving, if the trade rumours are accurate. In truth, they have no need for three goalies of Pitton, Vokoun and Denis's character but whatever combination they retain should still provide them with a solid presence between the pipes.

Overall Grade: B
Hurricanes:
Offense: The Hurricane offense should put some pucks in the net, but these goals should come from a wide spectrum of players. While Svitov and King will be key leaders for the team on the ice, look to see the whole team getting their share of goals.
Grade: B
Defense: Their defense is by no means spectacular, but it should get the job done. Hamrlik and Redden will be expected to lead the Hurricane defense but each pair should be able to stand up for themselves.
Grade: B-
Goaltending: Once again Boucher will be the uncontested #1 goalie for the Hurricanes, but will GM Derek Major pull up Jeremy Smith to replace Schneider as backup? For this we will have to wait and see. Boucher will do the job, but the absence of a solid backup could be a problem.
Grade: B
Overall Grade: B
Mustangs:
Offense: What can I say? The defending TFHL Champions have a great offense with great depth. The can put together three lines that compare to many teams first line. But, we shall see if Nash, Crosby and Baranov can be the catalysts towards another TFHL Championship.
Grade: A
Defense: Here is another fairly well rounded defense, This should provide the team with good coverage in their own end. Expect Chistov, Jovanovski and Waugh to be their defensive leaders.
Grade: B+
Goaltending: Here is the Young Guns achilles heal. With the loss of Jose Theodore to Free Agency, the Young Guns have a gaping hole between the pipes. It is unlikely that Montoya and Dubielewicz can hope to fill the hole left by Theodore. Expect the Young Guns to be in the market for a starting goalie early in the seaon.
Grade: C
Overall Grade: B
Rednex:
Offense: Look to see Lindstrom, Brent and Nilsson heading up the offense for the Rednex. It looks as if they will have to carry the brunt of the offensive load. The rest of their offensive squad will have a difficult time making much of a contribution considering the defensive talent in the league.
Grade: B-
Defense: The Rednex defense seems to be in much the same shape as the offense. Ohlund and Bodnarchuk will be expected to pull more than their fair share of the wait on the blueline.
Grade: C+
Goaltending: The Rednex' Johnson/Vincent combo should provide adequate protection between the pipes. They will be expected to pick up the slack from the defense.
Grade: B
Overall Grade: B-
Misconduct:
Offense: The Misconduct has their work cut out for them this year. Lindros will have to provide some much needed leadership for the team to be successful this year on the offensive front. Look to Havlat, Cole and Eaves to pick up their game to provide some necessary points for the team.
Grade: C+
Defense: The Misconduct's biggest weakness is their defense. Tselios will be expected to provide the leadership on defense that the team is lacking, but is he up to the challenge and is he able to fill those shoes? Look for the Misconduct testing out their farm prospects to try to fill the gaps in their roster.
Grade: C-
Goaltending: The team's strength this year will definitely be in their goaltending. Bryzgalov and Cloutier should provide solid coverage between the pipes. With Ridderwall as a good third goalie, they should be able to give Bryzgalov and Cloutier the rest they need to remain consistently on top of their game.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: C+
Season Prediction:
Once again it looks like the Saints, Bobcats and Ignite will be competing for the Conference Title. The Mauraders, Pontiacs, Spirit, Hurricanes, Owls, Aces, and Mustangs will be competing for the final five playoff spots, while the Rednex struggle to stay ahead of the Misconduct from being at the bottom. However, only time will tell if my predictions and analysis is correct but it looks as if the Eastern Conference is getting increasingly more competitive each year.

Offense: What can I say? The defending TFHL Champions have a great offense with great depth. The can put together three lines that compare to many teams first line. But, we shall see if Nash, Crosby and Baranov can be the catalysts towards another TFHL Championship.
Grade: A
Defense: Here is another fairly well rounded defense, This should provide the team with good coverage in their own end. Expect Chistov, Jovanovski and Waugh to be their defensive leaders.
Grade: B+
Goaltending: Here is the Young Guns achilles heal. With the loss of Jose Theodore to Free Agency, the Young Guns have a gaping hole between the pipes. It is unlikely that Montoya and Dubielewicz can hope to fill the hole left by Theodore. Expect the Young Guns to be in the market for a starting goalie early in the seaon.
Grade: C
Overall Grade: B
Rednex:
Offense: Look to see Lindstrom, Brent and Nilsson heading up the offense for the Rednex. It looks as if they will have to carry the brunt of the offensive load. The rest of their offensive squad will have a difficult time making much of a contribution considering the defensive talent in the league.
Grade: B-
Defense: The Rednex defense seems to be in much the same shape as the offense. Ohlund and Bodnarchuk will be expected to pull more than their fair share of the wait on the blueline.
Grade: C+
Goaltending: The Rednex' Johnson/Vincent combo should provide adequate protection between the pipes. They will be expected to pick up the slack from the defense.
Grade: B
Overall Grade: B-
Misconduct:
Offense: The Misconduct has their work cut out for them this year. Lindros will have to provide some much needed leadership for the team to be successful this year on the offensive front. Look to Havlat, Cole and Eaves to pick up their game to provide some necessary points for the team.
Grade: C+
Defense: The Misconduct's biggest weakness is their defense. Tselios will be expected to provide the leadership on defense that the team is lacking, but is he up to the challenge and is he able to fill those shoes? Look for the Misconduct testing out their farm prospects to try to fill the gaps in their roster.
Grade: C-
Goaltending: The team's strength this year will definitely be in their goaltending. Bryzgalov and Cloutier should provide solid coverage between the pipes. With Ridderwall as a good third goalie, they should be able to give Bryzgalov and Cloutier the rest they need to remain consistently on top of their game.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: C+
Season Prediction:
Once again it looks like the Saints, Bobcats and Ignite will be competing for the Conference Title. The Mauraders, Pontiacs, Spirit, Hurricanes, Owls, Aces, and Mustangs will be competing for the final five playoff spots, while the Rednex struggle to stay ahead of the Misconduct from being at the bottom. However, only time will tell if my predictions and analysis is correct but it looks as if the Eastern Conference is getting increasingly more competitive each year.
